On Monday afternoon, a fatal three-vehicle collision occurred on the I-10 East Freeway near Beltway 8 in east Harris County. This led to the closure of the eastbound lanes of the Eastex Freeway, which have since been reopened, Click2Houston reported. The crash was first reported at 1:33 p.m., and authorities confirmed that at least one person was killed in the incident, a front-seat passenger in a Chevy Silverado.
According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, the accident involved a box truck experiencing engine problems, which slowed to around 15 mph on the freeway. Two vehicles managed to swerve to avoid a direct collision, however, a Chevy Silverado was not as fortunate and struck the box truck, FOX 26 Houston reported. The impact was fatal for the passenger in the Chevy, who died at the scene. The Chevy's driver was hospitalized as a precautionary measure, and no other injuries were reported.
The identity of the deceased has not been released, pending notification of next of kin. In the aftermath of the crash, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez of Harris County estimated that the roadway would be closed for several hours. Traffic was diverted to the Dell Dell exit – contributing to congestion and delay in the area. "Investigators said the driver of a Chevy Silverado truck also attempted to swerve to avoid the box truck but struck the truck," reported Click2Houston. All lanes were reported to be open again by 5:46 p.m.
In their investigation, authorities reported that no signs of intoxication were present among the drivers involved.
