Clifton residents and commuters, gear up for the latest shuffle in the long dance of construction on US Highway 6. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) just announced that the project is stepping into its final phase. Monday, June 2, marks the day of fresh starts and the continuation of work to revitalize this essential stretch of road from 1st Street to just past 5th Street.
Despite past hiccups with soggy soils, crews from United Companies have drained the delays away, hammering out an updated schedule and finishing both water and sewer upgrades. Reported by CDOT, "storm drain improvements are anticipated to be fully installed near the end of the summer." Keeping it moving, next in line is the second roundabout at 5th Street, making way for not only an additional eastbound lane but also enhanced pedestrian and bike pathways.
It won't be all smooth driving just yet. You'll need to carve out an extra 10 minutes when traversing US 6, as advised by CDOT, with some traffic shifts to watch for. Side street access to US 6 will be a no-go in construction zones, and those timely left and sometimes right turns into businesses will be a snag during the rebuild. But, not to worry, local access will stay open, it might just require a slight detour.
The end goal is a safer, more efficient US 6. According to CDOT, the completed project will align better with updated traffic patterns, already evident with the completed 1First Street roundabout. The entire project is part of a broader 10-year plan to revamp the US 6 corridor in Mesa County and is set to wrap up come spring of 2026.
