Five individuals were arrested during an incident at Portland State University on Monday, as reported by the Portland Police Bureau. Names and charges were released following the arrests, which included 27-year-old Levi M. Ewing for Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree, and 34-year-old Emery R. Hall for Disorderly Conduct in the Second Degree and Criminal Mischief in the Third Degree. Other individuals taken into custody were Chiara L. Jacob, 24, for Harassment; Brian P. Michaelis, 20, for Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree; and Garrett W. Redmond, 25, for Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree.
The arrests took place outside the Smith Memorial Student Union, where a non-university-affiliated event sparked a need for crowd control, which quickly escalated into chaos, necessitating intervention by law enforcement, according to information provided by the Portland Police Bureau. Portland State University's Campus Public Safety Office first called for support from the PPB around 7:00 p.m., and within an hour-and-a-half, the five arrests were made and the situation was diffused.
The Portland Police Bureau extended gratitude towards various collaborators in a statement published, "PPB would like to acknowledge and thank PSU, the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office, and other city bureaus for their collaboration during this event." This sentiment underscores the cooperation between the university, local law enforcement, and city officials in swiftly addressing the disturbance.
Further details about the incident and the nature of the event that led to the arrests have not been released. The investigation is ongoing, and PPB has pledged to keep the public informed as new information becomes available. Confusion during the event led to significant tension on campus. However, authorities managed to maintain control, and the involvement of the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office hints at the potential of subsequent legal proceedings.
