Flagstaff locals are invited to have their say on a project that's expected to shape the future of the city's youth. A community meeting is set for Thursday, May 29, where the City of Flagstaff will gather public input on the Montalvo STEM Education Community Center. The discussion kicks off at 5:30 p.m. at the Aquaplex, located at 1702 N Fourth St, for those ready to contribute their vision for the proposed facility.
Hoping to infuse the center with the community’s values, city officials are seeking opinions on concept designs. While gathering feedback on the facility’s future use, those interested in meeting the design professionals will also have the opportunity to pose questions to building representatives and City staff.
The emphasis on STEM originated back in 2020, pinpointing an erstwhile fire station next to the Joel Montalvo baseball complex as a promising site for the new center. Following a detailed building analysis and facility concept plan, the old structure at 2230 E. Spruce Ave was dismantled, clearing the path for development. Backing the project, the American Rescue Plan Act revenue replacement fund proved to be a crucial financial lifeline.
March 2025 marked a turning point, with the Flagstaff City Council endorsing a Design-Build Services Agreement with Loven Contracting, Inc. Interested parties can contact Public Works Director Scott Overton at [email protected] for any queries related to the project, as per the city announcement.
