The residents of Garland have spoken, casting their ballots in the May 3 general election with a turnout exceeding 9,800 voters. According to an announcement on the city's official website, the unofficial cumulative results have ushered in Ed Moore for District 3, Carissa Dutton for District 6, Joe Thomas for District 7, and Chris Ott for District 8. Additionally, the four Grow Garland Bond Program propositions passed with flying colors, gaining more than 65% of the vote in favor.
However, the mayoral race did not culminate with such decisiveness, triggering a runoff as no candidate clinched a majority. Deborah Morris emerged with 42% of the vote, while Dylan Hedrick followed at 33%, leading the race. Garland's official website explains, "A runoff is required when no candidate receives a majority of the votes." The top two candidates from the initial election now face a subsequent showdown for the city's mayoral seat.
Voters who wish to review the nitty-gritty can find the complete election results at DallasCountyVotes.org and CollinCountyTX.gov/Elections. The results are slated for review during a City Council special meeting on May 13, when the newly elected Council Members—Moore, Dutton, Thomas, and Ott—will take their oaths.
Garland citizens will return to the ballot boxes for the mayoral runoff election slated for June 7. Early birds looking to beat the Election Day lines can cast their early votes from Tuesday, May 27, to Tuesday, June 3.
