The investigation into a police shooting in Calhoun, Georgia is currently under the jurisdiction of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), following a request from the local police department. This incident unfolded on Outlet Mall Road late Tuesday evening, resulting in two civilians being injured, while no law enforcement officers sustained injuries during the engagement.
Preliminary reports disclosed that the incident occurred on April 29, around 11:40 p.m., when local, state, and federal drug task force agents from various agencies were engaged in a narcotics operation. A vehicle, occupied by a male driver and a female passenger, was to be stopped by the officers. But as per the GBI's early findings, which were shared in an official statement, the driver allegedly drove directly towards the officers, prompting a DEA agent to discharge their weapon at the vehicle, consequently injuring both individuals inside.
The man and woman who were shot have been transported to local medical facilities for treatment; the woman's condition was severe enough to necessitate an airlift by life force to the hospital. The current status of the injured parties has not been released to the public at this time.
The GBI has reiterated its commitment to conducting an independent and thorough investigation of the shooting. Upon completion of said investigation, the findings will be submitted to the Gordon County District Attorney Erle Newton III's Office for a comprehensive review. This procedural step aims to provide a transparent and accountable resolution in light of the shooting incident.
