On Monday, Governor Brian P. Kemp announced a slate of new and returning faces to a range of Georgia's state entities. The total count of appointments and reappointments came in at 39, spanning sectors from education to law enforcement – a move that promises to keep the wheels of various state functions turning smoothly. A comprehensive list provided by the governor's office unpacked the names and the impressive qualifications behind each of them.
Among the appointees, Donald Dowless, President of Shorter University, has been named to the Nonpublic Postsecondary Education Commission. Dowless, with an extensive background in Christian studies and academic leadership, brings with him experience from both missionary work and a number of teaching posts at several universities. The Georgia Board of Athletic Trainers will retain the expertise of Yusuf Jamal Ali and see the continued service of Jeffrey Hopp, Director of Sports Medicine at Marietta City Schools, a veteran in the field recognized for his contributions to athletic health and safety, according to the Office of the Governor press release.
Notable reappointments include Scott Sweeney, a primary figure in the education sector, known for his time on the Cobb County Board of Education and the Georgia State Board of Education. Sweeney has juggled numerous state and local board positions, leveraging his business savviness and commitment to educational advocacy. His latest role on the State Charter School Commission aligns with past duties that circle the realms of education policy and business law.
The Georgia Historical Records Advisory Council will benefit from the continued presence of Mary McCartin Wearn, whose leadership and academic tenacity has bolstered arts and culture programs throughout her tenure. For law enforcement and public safety, the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council welcomes back Stan Stalnaker, celebrated for his three-term service on the Tift County Board of Commissioners and a legendary 29-year stint with the Georgia State Patrol. Stalnaker, a man of multiple degrees and awards, is notably a graduate of the law enforcement twilight zone – the FBI National Academy.
On the environmental front, the Board of Natural Resources will see the return of members like Steven Hufstetler and Brent Layton, both installed to steer Georgia towards greener practices and policies. Patrick Denney, a businessman with ties to land management, grabs the chairmanship for the North Georgia Mountains Authority, aiming to harness his passion for the Great Outdoors in a position with clear vistas for conservation and stewardship efforts.
