A tragic event unfolded in Tallmadge Township earlier this month, as a 19-year-old Grand Valley State University student, Connor Lotterman, died after being shot in the head during a party. The incident occurred just after 11 p.m. last Friday. A 20-year-old party-goer, whose name has not been released, was identified as the person who discharged multiple rounds through the floor of an upstairs bedroom, with one bullet striking Lotterman downstairs, as reported by FOX17.
The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office, shedding light on the senseless loss, noted that the bullets broke through the floor, resulting in Lotterman's injury, which led to his death. An accidental ruling was assigned to the death by the Kent County Medical Examiner, and alcohol is believed to have played a role in this tragic shooting. As stated by WOODTV, the shooter fired the shots from his loaded gun, and the Ottawa County Prosecutor's Office is reviewing the case for potential charges.
The university community is mourning the loss of one of its own. "The Grand Valley community is saddened by Connor's tragic death," Aaron Haight, GVSU Dean of Students, said in a statement cited by WOODTV. "On behalf of President Mantella, the Laker community extends our deepest sympathies to his family and friends."
Neighbors expressed shock about the incident in what they described as a normally quiet area, while Capt. Jake Sparks from the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office underscored the importance of proper firearm storage to prevent such tragedies. A memorial service for Lotterman is scheduled for tomorrow at Grace Protestant Reformed Church, with visitation preceding the service. The Holland Sentinel provided this information.
The authorities continue investigating the incident, urging anyone with information to contact the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office or submit tips via Silent Observer.
