Elk Grove and the surrounding Sacramento County community witnessed a vegetation fire Sunday when gusty winds fanned the flames across an abandoned orchard south of the city. The Cosumnes Fire Department rushed to the scene near Carroll and Eschinger roads just before 1:30 p.m., as a large plume of smoke became visible, confirmed by footage from an AlertCalifornia camera, as reported by KCRA.
The blaze engulfed about 50 acres before fire crews got the upper hand; officials relayed the information to KCRA reporter Andres Valle. Despite the fire being put out before 5 p.m. in the afternoon the haze hung stubbornly in the air as winds continued to howl across the valley which further complicated the firefighting efforts.
According to the KCRA 3 Weather Team, strong winds had moved into the region over the weekend. The National Weather Service data corroborates this, showing winds gusting nearly 30 mph on Sunday, a key factor in the spread of the flames as reported in a separate piece by FOX40.
Cosumnes Fire crews were able to put out the fire by the end of the day, though the cause is still unknown. KCRA 3 and FOX40 have both asked the fire department for more details and are waiting for a response.
