The Hamilton Police Department in Ohio recently hosted its eighth weekly session of the Citizens Police Academy, as detailed in a social media post from the department. The evening's discussion, led by Officer Rush and Officer Hiatt, centered on Operating a Vehicle under the Influence (OVI) and traffic enforcement strategies.
Participants were provided with a hands-on experience with the SIDNE (Simulated Impaired Driving Experience) Cart, designed to graphically demonstrate how impaired driving can severely affect one's motor skills and response time. The interactive session aimed to shed light on the real dangers of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and also highlighted how quickly becoming a distracted driver poses a risk to road safety.
The event coincided with Police Memorial Week, an observation marked by both introspection on the sacrifices made by police officers and engagement with the community. Demonstrating this communal spirit, attendants Malinda and her husband were recognized by the department for their contributions of sweet treats for the evening, a gesture of goodwill underscoring the week's somber remembrances.
"We had the SIDNE Cart out and discussed how our bodies are affected by drugs and alcohol. We also discussed how quickly things can happen by being a distracted driver," the Hamilton Police Department shared in its post. The session appeared well-received, with participants engaging in the educational activity while actively discussing the topics at hand. The Citizens Police Academy continues to be a bridge between the Hamilton Police and the community, fostering transparency and understanding regarding the challenges of law enforcement.
While the Academy provides a structured platform for police-civilian interaction, initiatives like these offer a glimpse into the day-to-day realities faced by officers on duty. The Hamilton Police Department evidently seeks to not only inform but also proactively engage its citizens in making the roads safer for everyone. "Thank you Malinda!!💙😁" the department expressed, valuing the community's show of support and participation as they navigate the intricate terrain of policing and public service.
