In a solemn act of remembrance, Governor Josh Green, M.D. has ordered that both the United States and Hawaiʻi state flags be flown at half-staff at the Hawaiʻi State Capitol along with all state offices, agencies, and with the Hawaiʻi National Guard for National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend. As the sun rises and sets today, May 4, these flags will pay homage to the courage and ultimate sacrifice of 70 firefighters lost in the line of duty during 2024, along with those who perished in years past.
The directive, which aligns with the President's national proclamation, signifies a pause in the daily hustle to honor those who bravely confronted peril, their actions speaking volumes of their unwavering commitment to safeguard lives, often leaving their own families to do so, their selflessness remembers not for the laurels that bravery might confer but for the protection it ensures for the wider human family. "This weekend, we pause to remember the firefighters who gave their lives in the line of duty. Their bravery went beyond the call — they faced danger not for recognition, but out of a deep commitment to protecting others.
