
From May 5 to May 11, police on Hawai‘i Island arrested 18 drivers for driving under the influence. Nearly half of those arrested were involved in a traffic crash, and two of the drivers were under 21 years old, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
This year, there have been 336 driving under the influence arrests, a decrease of 2.61 percent from 345 during the same period last year. The number of major crashes remains the same, with 367 recorded so far this year, matching last year's count for the same period, as reported by the Hawaii Police Department.
There have been 11 fatal crashes resulting in 12 deaths this year, a decrease of 21.4 percent in fatal crashes and 25 percent in fatalities compared to last year, which had 14 fatal crashes and 16 deaths during the same period. DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue across the island to prevent impaired driving, as stated by the Hawaii Police Department.
