Early Thursday morning, the Grand Parkway found itself at a standstill as an 18-wheeler accident ensued. According to Click2Houston, the overturned vehicle blocked multiple southbound lanes near West Road, spurring a hazardous materials spill. The Harris County Sheriff's Office, along with emergency crews, responded to the scene to manage the spill and the traffic disruption it caused.
The sheriff's office recommended that commuters avoid the area, and provided real-time traffic updates through the morning. KHOU confirmed that the incident led to, significant road closures with all lanes including shoulders being blocked. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported in the wake of the crash.
For those diverted by the closure, a handful of detours were offered. Motorists traveling east of Grand Parkway could use Highway 6 as an alternate route. Meanwhile, FM 529 or Clay Road were suggested for bypassing the crash site, with the potential to rejoin SH-99 or Highway 6 further south. For sturdier detours, or access to I-10, Beltway 8 (Sam Houston Tollway) was listed as a reliable alternative, as reported by KHOU.
Residual delays are expected to persist through the morning rush. Those on the road are advised to monitor updates via Houston TranStar and social media channels from HCSO, to navigate their way past the obstruction and onward to their destinations, as per KHOU.
