On Wednesday morning, a ceremony will see his widow, Jill Betz, accept the award in her husband's honor. The acknowledgment serves to recognize significant improvement and leadership in government, attributes Betz embodied throughout his life.
During his time, Betz was pivotal in advocating for legislative advancements in Florida, such as the Mark Wandall Traffic Safety Act, which permits the use of red light cameras. He also worked tirelessly to ensure the passage of the Walk in Their Shoes Act, a milestone in sexual assault legislation. His initiative to both celebrate and promote Hillsborough County culminated in the institution of Hillsborough Day in Tallahassee, an event to showcase the region's issues and accomplishments during legislative sessions. Despite these feats, the community mourns his loss; he passed away earlier this year at the age of 61.
According to Hillsborough County's official announcement, Betz's commitment to civic leadership went beyond legislation. He took an active role in local organizations, serving on the Florida State Fair Authority Board and founding More Transplant More Life, a campaign to drive awareness for organ donation. His work in 2023, notably in collaboration with the Hillsborough County and Sheriff Chad Chronister, was integral to the establishment of a second certified rape crisis center in the county, expanding critical support services for sexual assault survivors.
The Ellsworth G. Simmons Good Government Award, fittingly named after a long-serving county commissioner, was inaugurated in 1996 and has since been bestowed upon citizens who have distinctively contributed to the betterment of government through their leadership and vision. Past recipients have walked similar paths, leading initiatives and fostering growth that mirror the influential efforts of Betz himself.
