In a recent clampdown on human trafficking, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office apprehended a man accused of operating a human trafficking ring. According to a press release from the Sheriff's Office, 38-year-old Deune Dukes was arrested on last Thursday during an undercover operation.
Investigators indicated they were able to rescue at least two female victims, whom Dukes had allegedly forced to perform sexual acts in exchange for drugs. These women also exhibited visible bruising believed to be inflicted by Dukes. Furthermore, detectives are investigating the involvement of a possible third victim and a fourth female who Dukes was purportedly grooming, though she had yet to be compelled to perform sexual acts at the time of his arrest.
Upon executing a search warrant at Duke's residence, detectives discovered an assortment of illegal drugs including Methamphetamine, Powder and Crack Cocaine, MDMA, and Suboxone Patches. Prior to his arrest, Dukes had already been sought for multiple active warrants, which included Failure to Appear for charges ranging from Resisting Arrest in Retail Theft to Possession of Cocaine and Battery.
With Dukes now in custody, additional charges have been levied against him. "Human trafficking is one of the most heinous crimes we confront," Sheriff Chad Chronister was quoted in the press release. He further remarked, "These survivors endured unimaginable trauma. Our top priority is protecting the vulnerable and making sure every predator responsible is held fully accountable." The survivors are presently receiving support in their recovery from the non-profit organization Selah Freedom.
