Honolulu has designated Wildfire Community Preparedness Day on Saturday to encourage residents to take steps to reduce wildfire risks around their homes and neighborhoods. According to the City and County of Honolulu Fire Department's website, Andy Sugg, Chief of Staff to Mayor Rick Blangiardi, is scheduled to present the proclamation on behalf of the mayor, as reported by the Honolulu Fire Department.
The Honolulu Fire Department's website shared a statement from Battalion Chief Pao-Chi Hwang, who said, "Wildfire Community Preparedness Day is an opportunity to raise awareness and take action in creating safer and more resilient communities. Wildfires are becoming more frequent and intense due to climate change, extended droughts, and increased fuel loads. Homes and communities are at risk, but proactive preparedness today can reduce damage and save lives tomorrow." The statement discusses the risks of wildfires and the importance of preparedness.
“Preparedness starts at home, but protecting our communities takes all of us together. Make it a goal to work with your neighbors this May [Wildfire Awareness Month] to start protecting your community. Every action that reduces risk increases protection!” said Elizabeth Pickett, Co-Executive Director of the Hawaiʻi Wildfire Management Organization. Hawaiʻi Wildfire Management Organization and the Honolulu Fire Department provided tips for creating defensible spaces, such as clearing flammable debris, maintaining short grass, and planting drought-tolerant native plants. They also recommend becoming a Firewise Community and using the Hawaiʻi Wildfire Management Organization’s Ready, Set, Go! Guide for more safety information. Residents are also encouraged to download the Honolulu Alert app for emergency and weather updates.
