Early this morning, an attempted robbery at Snowflake Donut Shop in southeast Houston turned deadly when the store owner shot and killed the suspect, police reported. The Houston Police Department confirmed that the incident occurred at approximately 6 a.m. on Winkler Drive, near the Gulf Freeway. The suspect, believed to be in his 20s to 30s and wearing dark clothing, was pronounced dead at the scene after entering the shop with intentions to commit robbery.
According to KHOU, Houston Police Department Homicide Detective Socrates Trujillo stated, “This is a busy place… people getting some donuts or kolaches before they head to work or school.” He expressed relief that the altercation did not result in injury to bystanders. The store owner, who has not been named, was also armed and is reported to be "doing fine as best as he can be for right now" by Trujillo. Police are presently withholding charges against the store owner until the case undergoes a grand jury review to decide any further action.
A gun belonging to the suspect was recovered at the scene, and an open cash register indicated a robbery attempt gone wrong. Surveillance footage from the store and neighboring businesses is being reviewed to assist the investigation and to determine if the incident is connected to other similar crimes in the area. Recently, authorities had circulated a warning about young individuals targeting donut shops, though no connection between those warnings and this event has been established.
Officers are still seeking to establish the suspect's identity, stated the abc13 report. Witnesses present during the fatal exchange are being interviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.
