The Houston Afghan community is dealing with the aftermath of a shooting that took the life of Abdul Rahman Waziri, a former Afghan military trainer who had relocated to the city after assisting U.S. forces in Afghanistan. Waziri was killed during an altercation over a parking spot at his apartment complex. According to a report by ABC13, the shooter has not been apprehended, leading to calls for justice from the victim's family and community leaders.
Nisar Momand, a leader within the Afghan-American community, emphasized Waziri's heroic background, saying, “He was a hero” and had “served alongside American Special Forces in Afghanistan for many years, risking his life to protect the very freedoms we value today.” In what appears to have been a minor dispute gone deadly, the family's attorney, Omar Khawaja, told Click2Houston that the shooter "became very aggressive... and murdered him in cold blood."
Omer Yousafzai, another community leader, expressed concerns that are running high within the community. He said to Click2Houston, “The whole community is thinking, if this is happening to us, then what should we do?” These concerns are intensified by the fact that the alleged shooter remained in the area after the incident, as emphasized by family members, contributing to a heightened sense of fear among residents.
The response from law enforcement has become part of the issue itself. The attorney representing the family criticized the police for what he sees as a failure to properly investigate and communicate with witnesses. "There has not been a proper investigation to determine who saw what and heard what from the scene,” Khawaja stated in the Click2Houston report. He outlined that even if self-defense was to be claimed, it should be scrutinized within the bounds of the law, and not used to justify an aggressive act.
The family has taken their grievances directly to the Houston Police Department, with about two dozen supporters marching into HPD headquarters, as reported by ABC13, signs in hand, demanding action and accountability.
The shooter's freedom continues despite coming forward on the night of the shooting, with police stating that the District Attorney's Office declined to press charges initially. This meeting was regarded as a potentially positive turn in the police investigation according to Khawaja's post-meeting sentiments expressed to ABC13. Meanwhile, the Afghan community in Houston remains vigilant, urging law enforcement to arrest the suspect and conduct a thorough investigation to ensure that justice for Abdul Rahman Waziri is duly served.
