A Houston police sergeant and a suspect were involved in a violent altercation this past Sunday in the Galleria area. The sergeant was left injured after being pinned by a car, and the suspect was shot multiple times during the confrontation. This incident unfolded near Westheimer Road, adjacent to the renowned Galleria Mall, a bustling center of commerce and activity in the city, as reported by KHOU.
The incident began when off-duty officers working as security spotted a car linked to a robbery known as "jugging," where someone follows a person from a bank to rob them. When the officers approached, the driver sped off the wrong way onto Westheimer Road. An HPD sergeant tried to block the car but got trapped between the suspect's vehicle and another car. To stop the threat, the sergeant fired several shots at the driver, according to Assistant Chief Yasar Bashir, as obtained by ABC13.
Following the shooting, the injured driver managed to cross Westheimer before his vehicle came to a halt. Police officers detained the suspect and provided medical assistance until EMS services transported him to a hospital. While his condition has been described as serious, specifics regarding his current state have yet to be made public. "First, I'm very grateful, nobody else is injured. This is a very busy intersection, but unfortunately, you know, the suspect is the one who dictates a lot of our actions, our responses," Bashir stated, highlighting a tense situation narrowly avoided from devolving into greater casualty, according to KHOU.
The HPD sergeant, whose 25 years of service has undoubtedly ingrained in him a sense of immediacy in such perilous situations, is anticipated to survive the incident. As per HPD policy, the sergeant will be placed on administrative duty following the incident, and the footage from his body-worn camera is slated to be released within 30 days. In a report by ABC13, the officer's decision to fire was arguably compelled by the immediate threat presented when the suspect continued to drive, pinning the officer.
