The Dairy Queen at 2732 Wilkinson Boulevard in Charlotte, recognized as the oldest continually operating ice cream franchise in the city, has changed hands for a sum of $1.1 million. According to WBTV, this transaction took place despite the original $1.4 million asking price listed in 2022, a sale facilitated by property records divulged by Mecklenburg County.
Now owned by Khan & Singh Property Management LLC, the acquisition covers the historic Dairy Queen site and its surrounding half-acre; a decision on future plans for the property has not been divulged, though regular customers are expressing sentiments of attachment and hope for continuity, "Just a lot of great memories from when I was a kid and my mom used to bring us here and think about the first banana split that we got," Keith Tate, a Concord resident fondly recalled, while Victor Oliveria of west Charlotte conveyed his concerns about the potential closure of not just the Dairy Queen but also a nearby barbecue place, stressing that "It’s got history behind it, and I feel like that’s enough to keep it around," both statements obtained by WCCB Charlotte.
The Dairy Queen's future remains uncertain as its new owners have not announced plans; the site's potential for various commercial uses has been flagged, including options such as a fast food restaurant, a car wash, or an express oil change shop, this according to the listing details and also noted by WCNC Charlotte, meanwhile, residents are reflecting on the past and contemplating what the change signifies for their community.
