The Illinois fire service community convened to pay tribute to one of their own and acknowledge firefighters who have exemplified extraordinary service. According to a press release from the state government, the 32nd Annual Fallen Firefighter Memorial and Medal of Honor Ceremony remembered the late Aurora firefighter Cristian Medrano and recognized those who have performed above and beyond the call of duty.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker expressed his gratitude, stating, “Today, we gather with gratitude in our hearts as we honor the brave firefighters of Illinois—those who are serving every day and those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty." Governor Pritzker's remarks highlighted the community's remembrance and commitment to support fire service professionals. In a similar sentiment, State Fire Marshal James A. Rivera spoke to the selflessness of those who serve. "Today, we gather to honor and remember our brothers and sisters who have made the ultimate sacrifice, and to celebrate the remarkable legacy they have left behind for others to follow," he said. “We are safer because you are there for us on our worst days, ready to respond without hesitation.”
During the ceremony, fourteen firefighters received the Firefighter Excellence Award for their professionalism and exemplary service. Among the honored were members from the Buffalo Fire Protection District, Chicago Fire Department, Galesburg Fire Department, Streator Fire Department, Taylorville Fire Department, and Wilmington Fire Department. Additionally, five units received "Unit Citation" Awards for showing exceptional teamwork and professionalism in their response to incidents throughout the state.
The event also recognized twenty-two emergency personnel with the Certificate of Recognition for their dedication to the principles and traditions of the fire service, honoring their contribution with integrity and honor. The State Fire Marshal Life Safety Award was conferred upon three individuals distinguished by their efforts in fire prevention and life safety, counting among them professionals from the Village of Lansing Fire Department and OSFM Personnel in operations and administration.
