A tragic collision in Bloomfield Township has resulted in the death of an infant, delivered prematurely after an accident last Saturday afternoon. The crash occurred around 1:30 p.m. near the IHOP restaurant at 2187 S. Telegraph Road. According to CBS News Detroit, a white Honda Accord, carrying a pregnant woman among its passengers, was eastbound from a median turn-around when a black Jeep Grand Cherokee struck it. The Jeep reportedly ran a red traffic signal at the median, as per witnesses.
After being extricated from the vehicle, the pregnant passenger was rushed to a hospital for an emergency delivery due to her serious injuries. Despite the medical team's efforts to thoroughly save both mother and child, the premature baby ultimately died the following day, as reported by the Detroit Free Press. The child's death coincided with Mother's Day, adding an especially poignant note to the heartbreaking incident.
Other individuals were affected by the crash as well, including a child passenger in the Honda who was appropriately secured in a car seat and incurred minor injuries. Both drivers of the involved vehicles were also injured and subsequently received treatment at local hospitals. The accident is currently under investigation by the South Oakland County Crash Investigation Team, with the Bloomfield Township Police seeking any additional information from the public.
