Early Thursday morning, chaos unfolded on a San Marcos street when a truck plowed into a group of pedestrians. FOX 7 Austin reports the incident occurred at approximately 1 a.m. at the intersection of E. Hopkins Street and N. LBJ Drive. The San Marcos Police Department confirmed that five of the victims were transported to the hospital by ambulance, with a sixth victim taken via private vehicle. Fortunately, the injuries sustained are not considered life-threatening.
In a statement obtained by FOX 7 Austin, the 24-year-old driver, Enrique Gutierrez-Field of Waco, was found to be intoxicated at the scene and was arrested. Striking six people, the truck became an inadvertent weapon against innocents simply crossing the street. Gutierrez-Field now faces a slew of charges, including one count of unlawful carrying of a weapon and multiple counts of felony aggravated and intoxication assault.
According to KENS 5, specific charges have not been released by the police, but Gutierrez-Field's arrest on the scene was confirmed. In a city reeling from the impact, San Marcos authorities are urging the public to remain patient as they work diligently to piece together the events that led up to the crash. More information, a representative for the city indicated, will be released in due time.
As the investigation continues, the community seeks closure and justice. Gutierrez-Field is currently held in Hays County Jail, and Hays County court records indicate no bond information is available yet for the driver who seemed, in a moment of tragic recklessness, to forget the weight of responsibility behind the wheel. The San Marcos Police Department has yet to conclude its investigation into the incident, as reported by FOX 7 Austin.
