An investigation is underway by Maryland State Police following an early morning incident that resulted in the death of a pedestrian in Charles County, reports state.

The tragic event unfolded shortly before 2:40 a.m., when troopers from the La Plata Barrack responded to a crash reported on U.S. Route 301 at Sadie Lane in La Plata, the preliminary investigation showed that a gray Infiniti was stopped in lane two on southbound Route 301 and it was rear-ended by a blue Nissan Rogue, the driver of the Infiniti then got out of his car and ran across the center median into the opposing traffic lane, where he was tragically struck by a white tractor trailer.

According to Maryland State Police, the pedestrian who was hit has not been positively identified but is believed to have been the driver and sole occupant of the Infiniti. Emergency responders declared him deceased at the scene. Africa Violet, 45, of King George, Virginia, has been identified as the driver and sole occupant of the Nissan Rogue. She remained at the scene and provided details to the police.

The tractor-trailer driver also stayed on the scene, and no other injuries have been reported. The state troopers received aid from the Charles County Sheriff’s Office and the La Plata Police Department, and the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration responded to manage road closures during the initial response and investigation. This remains an active and ongoing investigation.
