A tragic collision on Interstate 295 claimed the life of a 48-year-old Jacksonville Beach man Monday morning. According to News4Jax, the incident occurred near State Road 202 when the man's truck failed to stop and struck a semi-truck that had halted for traffic. The force of the impact caused the victim's truck to spin out and come to rest on the roadside, facing southeast.
The aftermath of the crash led authorities to shut down the northbound lanes of I-295, as crews worked to clear the scene. Motorists were advised to divert onto J. Turner Butler Boulevard (JTB) during the investigation and cleanup efforts, which later enabled all lanes to be reopened by early afternoon. Reports from First Coast News indicate the driver of the semi-truck, a 46-year-old Orlando man, was unharmed in the collision.
The identity of the deceased has not been released pending family notification. Initial statements from authorities confirmed that the Jacksonville Beach man was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, a detail also noted by Action News Jax. His next of kin have been notified of the unfortunate event.
Authorities are still investigating the exact circumstances of the crash.
