The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office took to social media this week to mark National Police Week, a solemn period honoring peace officers who have paid the ultimate price in the line of duty. In a post shared on the JSO's official Facebook page, the department highlighted the poignant events taking place in Washington, D.C., including the National Peace Officers Memorial Service.
The commemorative week struck a particularly personal note for the JSO community, with the recent passing of Corrections Officer Brad McNew in October of last year; his family joined the JSO in the nation's capital to honor his memory and celebrate his dedication, the department has lost a total of 66 officers in the line of duty thus far. "We thank all of our peace officers—past and present—who dedicate their lives to serving our community," the Sheriff's Office expressed in the heartfelt post.
Officer McNew's sacrifice was one among the many recognized at the memorial service, as law enforcement officials from across the country converged in a shared space of mourning and remembrance.
