The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has made public a briefing concerning a fatal officer-involved shooting of Calixto Benvenutti, aged 44, which transpired on Lenox Avenue earlier this month. According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office's official statement, the incident took place on May 14, following a tense standoff that began the previous night.
Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office's detailed that on May 13 around 8:20 p.m., officers responded after receiving reports of a man, later identified as Benvenutti, discharging a firearm. Upon arrival, officers encountered Benvenutti with a gun on the porch of a trailer. He then entered the trailer, ignoring officers' calls to disarm and exit. An arrest warrant led SWAT officers to the scene, where the standoff continued into the early hours. At one stage, Benvenutti fired his gun into the ground before retreating back inside.
Upon dropping the stick and producing a concealed weapon from his waistband, SWAT officers—Detectives McCranie, Lyons, and Crews—opened fire, resulting in Benvenutti’s fatality. Despite emergency medical aid rendered by the officers, paramedics pronounced Benvenutti dead at the scene.
In keeping with a protocol aimed at unbiased evaluation, the State Attorney’s Office will be independently investigating the officers' use of force. JSO will also perform an internal review to affirm that the responding officers' actions complied with department policy. A Response to Resistance Board will deliberate over the findings before a final review by the Sheriff. Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office's emphasized their commitment to transparency in releasing the details of this incident.
