Jefferson City drivers, brace for upcoming delays. According to the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), a section of U.S. Route 54 near Business U.S. 50 (Missouri Boulevard) is scheduled to be reduced to a single lane in each direction starting next week. This traffic adjustment is part of a broader multi-bridge rehabilitation project launching in the state capital.
Specifically, the bridges spanning over Linden Drive and Stadium Boulevard are up for a facelift. To safely manage this construction, MoDOT’s contractor crews will start setting up for the traffic shift overnight on Monday. The full transition is expected to take a couple of days, during which drivers will be directed into a head-to-head configuration over Linden Drive, while Stadium Boulevard bridge will see lane-by-lane closures.
Motorists will face an 11-foot width restriction and may need to throttle back to 35 mph in the designated work zone. If you regularly travel between Missouri Boulevard and Stadium Boulevard, consider bypassing peak traffic by modifying your commute times. These new traffic patterns are expected to persist until mid-October, although there are incentives in place for an early wrap-up of the project.
Adding to the commute conundrum, several ramps are set for closure from Wednesday through mid-October, including: the Madison Street to westbound U.S. Route 54, the Missouri Boulevard to westbound U.S. Route 54, and the Christy Drive to eastbound U.S. Route 54, ramps. The Missouri Department of Transportation advises, "avoid peak hours and plan for extra travel time."
The changes are more than an inconvenience—they're about safety. MoDOT has a clear message for those navigating these work areas: "work with us by buckling up, putting your phone down, obeying all traffic signs, and slowing down and moving over in work zones." Here’s to hoping that a combination of strategy, foresight, and patience helps Jefferson City residents navigate the summer of adjustments ahead.
