A Missouri man has confessed to sending sexually explicit messages to someone he believed was a 13-year-old girl, but who was in fact an undercover FBI agent. Jamal W. Kimball, 31, from Jefferson County, pleaded guilty to a charge of transferring obscene material to a minor, according to a recent release from the U.S. Attorney's Office.
The communications happened on Kik Messenger between December 2022, and May 2023, where Kimball unknowingly interacted with the FBI agent. Images and messages he sent included sexual content as well as pictures of his genitals. Following a tip from the FBI office in Kansas City, a search warrant was executed at Kimball's home. Investigators there uncovered his cellphone and other electronic gadgets possibly linked to the crime.
During the search of his phone, it was revealed that Kimball wasn't just attempting to corrupt investigations by engaging in these unlawful acts with an undercover agent, but he was also involved with actual minors. He had solicited, and received child sexual abuse material from a 15-year-old in Ohio through another messaging platform, Snapchat. As stated by the Department of Justice, his sentencing is set for August 20.
This case is a part of a larger initiative known as Project Safe Childhood, launched by the Department of Justice in 2006 in an effort to combat the prevalence of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The program unites resources from federal, state, and local levels to locate and prosecute individuals who exploit children through the internet, as well as helping to identify and rescue the victims. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jillian Anderson is handling the prosecution for this case.
