A man has been convicted in a tragic crash that claimed the life of WGNO sports producer Mark Deane, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill announced. According to coverage from WWLTV, Deane was killed while riding his motorcycle over the Crescent City Connection on August 23 of last year when a vehicle struck him from behind.
The driver, Jorge Martinez-Sanchez, a Honduran national, received a ten-year sentence with four suspended, ensuring he serves six years behind bars, as stated in a report from Fox8Live. Deane, while en route to work during the early morning hours and abiding by safety measures with a helmet, succumbed to injuries on the scene when thrown into traffic by the impact.
In a tough-on-crime stance, Attorney General Murrill highlighted the legal status of Martinez-Sanchez, remarking, "Jorge Martinez-Sanchez was an illegal alien who should have never been in this state or country to begin with," as reported by NOLA.com. Murrill, known for her support of the Trump administration's immigration policies, has also engaged in legal actions concerning the enforcement of immigration laws at the local level.
Amidst the statements and legal outcomes, the personal loss of Deane resonated in court. "Mark Deane was a beloved member of the WGNO News team, who was working in New York a few years ago, but wanted to come back to New Orleans to take care of his aging mother and be with his son," Murrill said, remembering the producer not just as a colleague, but as a man of family and community importance, as expressed in a statement obtained by NOLA.com. Family members and close coworkers, striking a chord of the emotional toll, conveyed the depth of their loss in court, showcasing Deane as a revered father, friend, and colleague.
