The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety is in pursuit of several individuals connected to significant vandalism at the Bow in the Clouds Preserve. On April 25, according to WOOD TV8, three individuals were reported to have been knocking over barricades at the preserve during the day.
An interaction with an employee who was operating excavating equipment prompted the setting up of a surveillance camera. That evening, approximately 11:30 p.m., a group of five returned and rampaged, swinging baseball bats and spraying graffiti, inflicting around $100,000 in damage. "Several spray-painted messages were left behind, indicating clear protest against the equipment’s presence at the site," noted KDPS in a news release covered by WOOD TV8.
Heath Meyer, owner of the family-operated Generation III Excavating told WZZM 13, "Sixty percent of our equipment fleet is wiped out, you know, until damages can be repaired." The business was active at the preserve to work on a trail improvement project for the Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy. Meyer's company, with a background in conservation projects, now faces delays as they await rentals and process insurance claims.
After the incident, Meyer expressed his dismay and hope for resolution. "I really hope that the individuals are caught or turn themselves in." Meyer added, "I mean, I think that would be the best, but I want that to be a learning lesson of actions have consequences," Meyer told WZZM 13. The preserve's municipal sewer line maintenance, coupled with trail enhancements intended to promote greater public enjoyment of nature, have been disrupted due to the vandalism.
Law enforcement officials urge anyone with knowledge about the suspects to step forward and contact Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety at (269) 337-8139 or through the Kalamazoo Silent Observer line at (269) 343-2100, as mentioned in WWMT Newschannel 3.
