A 24-year-old man is in critical but stable condition following a shooting in Kalamazoo yesterday morning, with police still on the hunt for the main suspect involved. According to WZZM13, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to the incident after gunfire was reported in the 1100 block of Hays Park Avenue just past 9 a.m. The victim, a local resident, had been shot multiple times and underwent emergency surgery following the incident.
The course of events that led to the shooting appears to have been a physical altercation between the victim and the at-large suspect. In the midst of their confrontation, the suspect, described as a Black male in his early 20s with a slender build and dreadlocked hair, obtained a handgun and shot the victim multiple times, detailed by MLive. Despite the ongoing search, the suspect remains unidentified and at large.
While the principal suspect evades capture, two arrests have been made connected to the case. WOODTV reports an 18-year-old man from Kalamazoo was taken into custody for carrying a concealed weapon and aiding and abetting a felony. Additionally, a 29-year-old man, also from Kalamazoo, was arrested on outstanding warrants and charged as an accessory after the fact to a felony. Both men are currently held at the Kalamazoo County Jail awaiting arraignment.
Investigators made progress in the case with the discovery of evidence tied to the shooting after a search warrant was executed in the 1500 block of Kickapoo Court by the Kalamazoo County Special Weapons and Tactics team. Furthermore, Flock cameras in the vicinity proved essential by aiding in the identification of a suspect vehicle associated with the crime.
