Mark your calendars, Kenosha County residents. The annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event is making its return tomorrow, May 31, as confirmed by County Executive Samantha Kerkman. The event, slated as the sole countywide hazardous waste collection for the year, is set up at the Kenosha County Center in Bristol from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., welcoming city folks and those from surrounding towns and villages to properly dispose of their potentially harmful household wastes.

Hazardous waste runs the gamut from household cleaners, vehicle fluids, to garden chemicals and a slew of e-waste that often clutter our basements and closets. These items, including the likes of desktop computers, fax machines, and even water heaters, can be brought in for environmentally responsible disposal. Kerkman, in a statement obtained by Kenosha County's website, said, "We’re pleased to offer this free, convenient opportunity for Kenosha County residents to dispose of various household waste items in an environmentally friendly way."

However, trying to keep the landfill free of certain wastes, residents should note that the event will not accept items like latex paint, tires, or medical and pharmaceutical byproducts. For latex paint, which is not hazardous, the county recommends a do-it-yourself drying method involving kitty litter that allows for safe curbside disposal. More details on what is and isn't accepted can be found on the county’s official website.

In a dual effort to support the community, Waste Management teaming up with 1HOPE, are hosting a diaper drive during the event to assist foster families. They have encouraged, in the same announcement, that participants bring along unopened disposables for donation. "The diapers and wipes will benefit 1HOPE’s Foster Family Support Network, which assists foster families with their day-to-day needs through a team of compassionate volunteers," according to the Kenosha County announcement.
