The Kingsport Farmers Market is gearing up to immerse local second graders in the world of agriculture with an educational event scheduled for Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Partnering with Kingsport City Schools, Kingsport Parks and Recreation, and the Washington County Soil District, this initiative aims to give elementary school children hands-on experience as they rotate through a series of educational stations.
During Agriculture Week, the children will get to actively engage in interactive activities that include grocery bag coloring, tasting flavored water, exploring cattle farming, beekeeping, as well as dealing with watershed and soil analysis. They will also be participating in a physical education activity at Carousel Park, located nearby. The event is designed to offer fun while educating young minds on the significance of the journey that food takes from farm to table.
As per a statement obtained by the City of Kingsport's official webpage, Kristie Leonard, the Special Event and Cultural Arts Manager, emphasizes the importance of agricultural education. "In an increasingly urbanized world, understanding the fundamentals of agriculture—how our food is produced and its impact on our world—is more important than ever," she said. Leonard pointed out that such education equips students to be responsible consumers, environmentally conscious citizens, and potentially contribute to the agriculture industry.
