Residents of Kingsport are gearing up for an interactive celebration of the services that keep their city running smoothly. The annual Public Works Day, coordinated by the City of Kingsport, is set to take place at the Farmers Market on May 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Families can expect a hands-on experience with the machinery and technology that support their daily lives, all happening during National Public Works Week.
This event connects the community to the behind-the-scenes operations of public services. According to the City of Kingsport's announcement, the theme for Public Works Day 2025 is "People, Purpose, Presence." Deputy City Manager Ryan McReynolds commented on the significance of public works, stating, "Meeting the needs of people is what gives public works its sense of purpose." He also added, "Many times, public works professionals will never meet those whose lives has been impacted because when things are going right, no one knows that public works is there. Yet, with or without fanfare, public works is ever present, working in the background to advance quality of life for all."
The event promises to be a showcase of capabilities with approximately 50 pieces of equipment on display. These will range from automated garbage collection trucks and leaf collection equipment to more specialized machinery like sewer camera vans and a directional drill machine. Children will have opportunities for playful interactions including rides in a bucket truck and simulating operations of a backhoe, as reported by the City of Kingsport.
Public Works Day is also an educational avenue for the City of Kingsport residents to learn about the daily functions of various departments. All branches within public works are set to be represented, with employees on hand to explain the workings of the equipment and to answer questions. Essential to the day's activities are presentations that aim to enlighten attendees about the critical role these services play in their communities.
Not limiting the excitement to heavy machinery, the event also includes various activities for younger participants, such as painting sign replicas of manhole covers, examining live bacteria under microscopes, and a sprinkler run. An intriguing "Then & Now" display will showcase the evolution of public works equipment, offering a tangible representation of progress over the years, as stated by the City of Kingsport.
The Kingsport Public Works Department stands as the largest non-school related department in the city, boasting about 360 employees, as per the City of Kingsport. Their roles span across multiple divisions, from water and sewer to IT and the Metropolitan Transportation and Planning Organization, all dedicated to ensuring the city's infrastructure and services are maintained and improved upon.
