A dramatic chase unfolded on the streets of La Mesa, leading to an officer-involved shooting, after a man suspected of domestic violence resisted arrest and endangered children in the process. According to a press release from the San Diego Police Department, the incident began yesterday when officers responded to reports of a man strangling a woman. Upon the arrival of the La Mesa Police, the suspect fled with a female victim and two young children in the car.
After a stop that allowed the woman to escape, officers learned that the pursuit encompassed more than just the suspect; there were two children involved, ages 5 and 7. Consequently, the chase was halted, highlighting the complexities law enforcement faces when innocence is entangled with alleged criminality. Especially since the pursuit resumed after the children were let out near the female victim’s location. As officers tried to stop the car again, the suspect rammed a police vehicle, causing an officer to fire his weapon. The suspect, Jahlil Johnson, was not hit by the gunfire.
The pursuit zigzagged into San Diego and then back to La Mesa, with officers deploying tire deflation devices multiple times to no avail. Finally, at 7800 University Avenue, a relative's bold intervention in traffic forced Johnson to stop. Despite a failed K9 bite and an escape on foot, Johnson was ultimately apprehended by a joint effort of La Mesa, San Diego, and El Cajon officers, the latter deploying a Taser and a police K9.
Transported to a local hospital for injuries sustained during his arrest, Johnson faces multiple felony charges, including domestic violence and child endangerment. Meanwhile, the pursuing officer, an eight-year veteran of the La Mesa Police Department, was also hospitalized for a head injury, but has since been released. Investigations into the officer's firearm use are in motion, with oversight by several agencies.
