Tragedy struck on Highway 97 in Deschutes County, Oregon, last Thursday evening as two vehicles collided head-on, resulting in a fire that drew in multiple emergency response teams. According to Oregon State Police reports, at approximately 8:52 p.m., a southbound Dodge Caravan, driven by 25-year-old Anthony Buddrick Torres of La Pine, swerved across the median and into a northbound commercial truck with a trailer, operated by Florentino Cruz Aguilar, 52, from Williams, California.
The impact of the crash was such that both vehicles swiftly became engulfed in flames. Despite the rapid intervention of local fire crews from Sunriver, Alfalfa, and La Pine Fire, they labored to extinguish the inferno. Tragically, the young driver of the Dodge was pronounced dead at the scene, while Cruz Aguilar emerged with what were reported as minor injuries; he was subsequently transported to a nearby medical center for treatment. Details of his current condition remain under wraps, but he seemed to have avoided major harm.
Highway 97 remained closed for several hours as the scene was carefully examined by the authorities and the remnants of the vehicles were cleared. This delay in traffic flow, while necessary for the public safety and the integrity of the ongoing investigation, marked another layer of disruption in the quiet community engulfed by the chaos of that night’s events.
Amid the aftermath, it was revealed that Torres had been reported as suicidal before the deadly incident, leading investigators to consider the possibility that the crash may have been deliberate. On-site law enforcement, including the Oregon State Police and the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office, worked in concert with the firefighters and Oregon Department of Transportation officials as they navigated through the tragic circumstances, not just as professional duty dictates but carrying the weight of the human story threaded through the wreckage.
