A convenience store confrontation in Lakeland has escalated into violence, resulting in one fatality and one injury. The Lakeland Police Department reports that the incident took place before 6:10 p.m. yesterday at the Fast Stop on 820 E. Memorial Blvd. A 19-year-old man, identified as Cornelius Gilmore Jr., has been arrested and is facing multiple charges, including second-degree murder.
According to the police, an 18-year-old woman, who was shot in the leg during the altercation, was taken to Lakeland Regional Health for treatment. The events unfolded when Gilmore and the teenage victim, having arrived separately, both made purchases inside the store. Exiting the store, the woman began to back out of her parking spot and nearly collided with a vehicle driven by a 37-year-old man, Graham—as stated in a report by WFLA.
The situation quickly deteriorated as Graham, taking offense, called the young woman a derogatory name. Following this, both Gilmore and the woman confronted Graham outside the store. A heated argument ensued, leading to a physical altercation between Gilmore and Graham, during which the fatal shots were fired. WTSP reported that Gilmore fired at Graham, missing him initially and striking the female victim in the leg before fatally hitting Graham in the head with a second shot.
Authorities indicated through their preliminary investigation that there was no prior acquaintance between the involved parties before the tragic event. After further inquiry, Gilmore was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder, second-degree attempted murder, and carrying a concealed firearm, as told by FOX 13 News.
