Polk County is grappling with the aftermath of a house fire that officials believe may have been intentionally set. The blaze, which broke out at a residence on Dawn Heights Drive in Lakeland, triggered a rapid response from Polk County Fire Rescue (PCFR) in the early hours this morning. The call to action came just before 4 a.m., with firefighters arriving to find the home halfway consumed by flame, as reported by WFLA.
Despite the severity of the situation, all occupants of the house had managed to evacuate by the time help arrived. One individual was transported to a hospital for treatment, while another was administered care on the scene, PCFR confirmed. The nearby vehicle that had also been caught in the inferno became another focal point for the firefighters' efforts, which brought the fire under control by 4:15 a.m., according to a statement obtained by FOX 13 News.
The incident has prompted an investigation by the Florida State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office to determine the precise cause, as signs point towards arson as the culprit. As the probe into the fire's origin continues, PCFR has sought the assistance of the Red Cross to support those displaced by the fire's destruction, ABC Action News reported.
