The Las Cruces Fire Department has appointed a new Deputy Chief of Administration, veteran firefighter Tibor Kocsis. This appointment, announced yesterday, marks the ascension of a 17-year member of the department to a key administrative position. Kocsis started his new duties on May 19, after serving as Battalion Chief since 2021, where his responsibilities spanned both administrative functions and operations.
Chief Michael Daniels expressed his confidence in Kocsis's abilities, "I’m pleased and proud of the work Tibor has done for our community over the years," as reported by the City of Las Cruces. Daniels added, "He’s a proven leader and, over the years, has helped guide some of the most pivotal operations of our department." Daniels affirmed his trust, stating, "I have the upmost confidence in Tibor and will lean on him for years to come."
Kocsis's leadership experience extends beyond his time in office roles; he has been at the helm of the department's Technical Rescue Team, leading operations in various mountain rescues and to Ruidoso, N.M., following the 2024 flooding that set records. He also played a role in managing the response to the migrant influx of 2019. He's not only active on the ground but also in the broader firefighting community, serving as the New Mexico Vice President for the Southwestern Fire Chiefs’ Association.
His involvement with the International Association of Firefighters and his role in labor management as a Chief Officer, corroborate his reputation as a leader well-versed in both operational efficacy and the nuances of firefighter welfare. Kocsis is set to further his administrative qualifications with the completion of a bachelor's degree in business administration from Western New Mexico University in December 2025. He already holds an associate’s degree from New Mexico State University.
