Las Cruces has taken a significant stride in addressing the affordable housing crisis with the ribbon-cutting ceremony of The Three Sisters Apartments. This new development introduces 70 residential units, targeted at low- to moderate-income families. According to the City of Las Cruces, there is a current shortfall of 5,600 rental units, indicating a high demand for initiatives like this one that aim to bridge the housing gap.
The Three Sisters Apartments stand on what was once a neglected Superfund site, now transformed into a space that promotes environmental responsibility through adaptive reuse. The city contributed land for the entrance and driveway, which reinvigorates a previously abandoned zone. Las Cruces Mayor Pro Tem Johana Bencomo told the City of Las Cruces, "The completion of The Three Sisters Apartments is a shining example of what we can accomplish when we work together for the good of our community."
In terms of design, the complex includes one-, two-, and three-bedroom options, along with amenities geared towards creating a supportive community, such as a community center and resident support services. Funded by a diverse mix of sources, this $22 million project is the result of collaborations with Chelsea Investment Corporation, CC Housing, New Mexico Housing Trust Fund, and various local and state entities. “The Three Sisters affordable housing development represents the best, most innovative, and highly sought-after lifestyle for deserving, hardworking families in Las Cruces," said Charles Schmid, CEO of the Chelsea Investment Corporation, as per the City of Las Cruces.
