In a poignant nod to bravery and service, several members of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) were recently hailed as heroes during a ceremony held in their honor. The James D. Hoff Peace Officer Memorial Ceremony, which took place in Reno, Nevada, spotlighted the commendable acts of valor performed by these officers in situations that could easily have turned far more tragic than they did.
Officer Ruben Saenz received recognition for what was described as "extraordinary bravery" during a violent episode at a Salvation Army building on August 26, 2023. A social media post from LVMPD detailed how Saenz faced and stopped an armed assailant, managing to save multiple lives in the process. It's these kinds of quick-witted actions that distinguish an everyday police officer from a true protector of the peace.
Alongside Saenz, LVMPD's Officers Alejandro Alfaro-Pineda, Kimberly Guzman-Alvarado, and Rocky Roman were also cited for their "courageous response" to a dangerous domestic violence situation. On that subsequent day, an armed suspect had forced entry into an apartment, but thanks to the officers' rapid intervention, residents were kept safe from potential harm. The same LVMPD post described these officers as reflecting "the highest standards of courage, dedication, and service" — not a small feat in a profession that routinely asks individuals to put their lives on the line.
The ceremony also served to solemnly remember those who have paid the ultimate price in the line of duty. The collective sorrow and respect felt were palpable as honor guards and law enforcement from across the state, including the LVMPD Honor Guard, gathered to pay their tributes. It's at times like these that the community comes together to both grieve and to celebrate the sacrifices made by those sworn to protect us.
