A vehicle that had been subject to a police pursuit ended in fatal consequences, according to the Los Angeles Police Department's South Traffic Division and the Multi-Disciplinary Collision Investigation Team. What began as a potential DUI chase early in the morning of March 28 ultimately led to the death of a juvenile driver when the burgundy SUV they were in ran a red light at high speed and collided with a compact sedan, as recounted by LAPD's newsroom.
Authorities report that the incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. with the SUV speeding westbound on Century Boulevard before it met its end at the intersection of Sepulveda Boulevard. With its high rate of speed, patrol officers from the Southwest Division initially pursued the vehicle but chose to abandon the chase before the collision, a decision seeking to reduce potential harm to the public. Charged with minor injuries only, two other occupants, a 19-year-old from Los Angeles and a 22-year-old from Hawthorne, fled the scene, were later detained by Airport Police officers.
The aftermath of the crash saw the young driver pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics and subsequently identified by the County Medical Examiner. The two apprehended men cooperated with police during the interviews, as reported by STD detectives, contributing to the unfolding narrative of this fatal incident. Hospitalized with minor injuries, the driver of the sedan, also caught in the crash, is currently recovering, a small but important detail amidst the larger calamity.
