Commuters in Atchison and Holt counties should brace for some potential slowdowns starting on Monday, as a major resurfacing project gets underway on sections of U.S. Route 59. The Missouri Department of Transportation has announced that Herzog Contracting Corp., LLC will spearhead the improvements, which kick off at the Iowa state line in Atchison County and will head south toward Missouri Route 46 near Fairfax, before shifting to a stretch of Route 59 in Holt County.

According to the project outline, once work in Atchison County is complete, the construction teams will focus on the area from east of Route B all the way to Interstate 29 in Holt County, motorists can expect some disruptions during the resurfacing, specifically, the traffic flow will be narrowed down to a single lane with flaggers on-site to direct the vehicles through the active zones, expect delays, especially during peak commuting hours.

The operations are set to roll out six days a week, with crews taking full advantage of daylight hours. The initial phase of this extensive project aims to wrap up by the end of July 2025, offering a smoother ride on these key corridors.

Moreover, there's more reparation work on the horizon as Route 159, stretching from the Little Tarkio Creek to Interstate 29 near Mound City, is slated to also undergo resurfacing in July, the entirety of these endeavors, consisting of both Route 59 and Route 159 refurbishments, is anticipated to be completed by November 2025, ensuring improved road conditions for local and through traffic.
