A tragic turn of events unfolded early Tuesday morning when a man lost his life after his vehicle encountered a large puddle on the Katy Freeway feeder in west Harris County, culminating in him losing control and crashing into a tree. According to Click2Houston, the accident occurred just before 2 a.m. near the Mason Road exit.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office reported that the driver was taking the Mason exit while heading west when they hit floodwaters, lost control, and crashed, resulting in a fatal accident. Heavy rain had flooded the area, and warnings were in place about dangerous driving conditions, but the risk proved too great. After the crash, deputies closed the road for several hours overnight to investigate and remove the wreckage. It reopened after 6 a.m, as reported by Click2Houston.
The passenger, who was also in the car at the time, survived and was last reported to be in stable condition after being taken to the hospital, according to ABC13. In the wake of the incident, Sgt. Bondurant offered guidance for drivers who might find themselves in similar situations, "Watch your speed. Make sure you're looking ahead of your vehicle. If you hit a body of water, don't steer. Just keep driving straight through it. Keep on gas, and you'll be OK" Bondurant told ABC13.
