A fatal collision in downtown Salt Lake City claimed the life of a 46-year-old man late last night. The Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) reported that they began investigating the incident just before 11:45 p.m. last night, after receiving a 911 call about an accident near 500 South State Street, according to SLCPD.
Initial findings suggest the man was crossing State Street, north of the intersection and outside a designated crosswalk, when he was hit by a northbound SUV. The driver of the SUV remained at the crime scene along with three passengers. The collision also had a witness, who was another driver and was questioned by police. Efforts to save the man's life were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the site. Identification of the victim is pending notification of his family.
As per the preliminary investigation, detectives have determined that the driver of the SUV had the green light when traveling through the intersection. The driver involved cooperated with officers, and no arrests or citations have been made at this point. Furthermore, the investigation did not indicate signs of impairment from the SUV's driver.
The police quickly cleared the area and opened the roads afterward. Behind the yellow tape, specialist units such as the Collision Analysis & Reconstruction (CAR) Team and SLCPD Crime Lab technicians were on hand to inspect the site. Their work involved mapping the crash scene, analyzing vehicle dynamics, and collecting evidence for what was sure to be a meticulous progression through the justice system. The CAR unit's responsibility is to investigate severe traffic accidents involving serious injuries or fatalities across the Salt Lake Valley.
