Yesterday, a confrontation between police officers and a man in South San Francisco ended in the individual's death after he allegedly brandished what turned out to be a replica firearm. According to a social media post from the South San Francisco Police Department, multiple calls were placed regarding a white male in his 40s acting aggressively and attempting to force entry into a public restroom with a metal object on Oyster Point Boulevard.
Responding officers attempted to approach the suspect, who fled, leading them on a chase through an area reported to be densely populated with pedestrians. The tense pursuit culminated when, the police claim, the suspect pointed what appeared to be a gun at the officers. The South San Francisco Police Department statement details that less-lethal force was initially tried but proved ineffective, and the situation escalated when the suspect allegedly threatened officers with the item in hand. In response, two South San Francisco officers, in conjunction with one from the San Bruno Police Department, opened fire.
Despite immediate medical assistance from staged South San Francisco Fire Department paramedics, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. It was later revealed that the weapon the suspect was carrying was not a real firearm, but a replica. As of now, the suspect remains unidentified. The incident did not result in any injuries to officers or bystanders.
Under the guidelines of AB 1506, the California Department of Justice has taken on the investigation of the officer-involved shooting.
