An inmate escape from the Orleans Parish Jail this morning has resulted in a large-scale manhunt throughout New Orleans. According to WWLTV, one of the 11 inmates who broke out of the facility has been caught, with 10 others still at large and considered armed and dangerous.
The escape was discovered during a routine headcount at 8:30 a.m., triggering an immediate lockdown of the jail, which is located less than 3 miles from the bustling French Quarter. Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson characterized the breakout as very serious and unacceptable, and informed reporters that those who assisted the inmates would be held responsible, as reported by abc7 Chicago.
Further details provided by WDSU indicate that several of the escapees are facing serious charges, including murder. An expansive search operation is in progress, involving the New Orleans Police, State Police, and the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office. Meanwhile, the authorities are conducting a full investigation to understand the circumstances and potential lapses that led to the escape, examining protocols, staff performance, and security measures.
Sheriff Hutson, expressing the gravity of the situation, told abc7 Chicago, "We are launching a full investigation to determine how this escape occurred, including reviewing facility protocols, staff performance and physical security measures." A close analysis of the jail tier from which the inmates escaped is underway as part of efforts to recapture the individuals and prevent future breaches. As the manhunt continues, local residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police.
