DC's local entrepreneurs have a reason to celebrate as Mayor Muriel Bowser and the Department of Small and Local Business Development (DSLBD) call the community to participate in DC Small Business Week 2025, which matches up with the National Small Business Week, a tradition upheld since 1963.

Mayor Bowser highlighted the significance of small businesses, stating, "When they grow, it means more jobs, stronger neighborhoods, and more opportunities for residents," she said, acknowledging their contribution in employing about 48.2% of the DC workforce, which equals nearly 233,000 individuals, according to the DC government's release. In local economies, they play a crucial role, with American Express research showing that 67 cents of every dollar spent at small businesses remains in the community, sparking a cascade of economic benefits.

One highlight of the week is DSLBD's Open House on May 7, which offers entrepreneurs hands-on assistance, networking chances, and guidance straight from experts. DSLBD Director Rosemary Suggs-Evans promised, "DSLBD is here to help DC businesses grow, stay rooted in their communities, and build long-term stability," as reported by the DC government website.

During the Open House, participants will receive valuable insights into the DC Green Book. This government resource elucidates how businesses can secure government contracts and highlights forthcoming opportunities, as per the announcement released by the DC government website. Besides, there are other Small Business Week events, such as a learning and networking event hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, set to provide businesses strategies for growth and resilience.
