Mayor Michelle Wu and the Boston Parks and Recreation Department officially welcomed the newest Flour Bakery + Café location to Boston Common during a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The event featured James Beard Award-winning pastry chef Joanne Chang and local community members.
According to the City of Boston, the new outpost is located in the Boston Common Concession Pavilion and was selected through a competitive RFP process. The City emphasized priorities such as community-focused food service, local ownership, and high-quality offerings.
Mayor Wu stated in the same release, “Flour Bakery brings community and deliciousness to Boston Common with new treats and classic favorites, helping to build the excitement and activation Downtown.”
Flour Bakery, which opened its first location in the South End in 2000, now operates ten locations in the Boston area. The Boston Common site, open since April 15, features special menu items such as soft serve and the Embrace Sticky Bun.
Joanne Chang shared her appreciation for the city’s support over the years, saying, “After 25 years of serving up sticky buns, BLTs, and warm smiles to Bostonians, the opening of our 10th bakery in the Boston Common is our love letter to the city,” as per the City of Boston release.
Chief Climate Officer and Interim Boston Parks Commissioner Brian Swett noted that the addition of Flour Bakery supports the City’s efforts to create sustainable, inclusive, and climate-resilient public spaces throughout Boston.
The bakery joins other seasonal attractions in the area, such as the UnCommon Stage and Beer Garden, as part of the Boston Common Master Plan, which aims to enhance the park’s cultural, historical, and environmental value.
Local officials including State Representative Jay Livingstone and City Councilor Sharon Durkan also attended the event and acknowledged the bakery's opening as a positive addition to the park and the broader community.
